Ghanaian Prime Minister Najib Kwachimera has made it clear that he believes that “prescription” should be “on the table” when it comes to addressing the growing needs of the country’s citizens. But with the country’s aging population and rising healthcare expenditure, rising drug costs and the growing public awareness about the dangers of herpes are driving up the cost of over-the-counter medicine.

This year’s battle began after a court in Nigeria ruled in favour of Kwachimera over a local man who claimed that he was given valtrex to manage his outbreaks.

“This medicine is manufactured by Mylan and has not been approved by the Ghana Food and Drug Administration (FDA). In the future, Mylan may continue to manufacture and sell Valaciclovir while we are experiencing price pressures,” the ministry added.
